Ross is the third-largest off-price retailer in the nation behind T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, operating 988 Ross stores in 27 states and in Guam. Although it has many stores, it does not have any locations in New England, New York, New Jersey, or in much of the Midwest.

It was first opened in 1950 by Morris Ross in San Bruno, California. In 1982, it was bought by Mervin Morris, founder of the Mervyns department store chain, who changed the format to off-price retail. Within three short years, the Ross brand expanded to over one hundred stores.

Ross also operates a chain of stores called dd’s DISCOUNTS, with 67 store locations in Florida, Texas, Arizona, and California. The “dd” stands for “deep discount”. The two stores typically operate side by side in strip malls or in former department stores, where they then divide the area between the two.
